- Industry / Category: Air Conditioning Repair (residential & commercial HVAC service)
- Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts
- Primary Keyword Tracked: “Air conditioning repair”
- Google Business Profile Status: Claimed and verified prior to engagement
- Estimated Listing Age: ~6 years (estimated from earliest visible reviews on the profile)

Google Business Profile Engagement Snapshot (Pre-Campaign)
A review of the live “Your Business on Google” dashboard at the start of the engagement showed a profile that was claimed and technically live, but under-leveraged:
- Profile Strength indicator: incomplete (Google’s own “Complete info” prompt was still active)
- Customer interactions recorded: 4
- Services, bookings, and update tools were present on the account but not being actively used to generate fresh engagement signals

Section 2
Pre-Optimization Audit
This audit phase was the foundation of the entire engagement: it established the baseline against which every later result is measured, and it revealed exactly why the listing was struggling to appear in local search – rather than guessing at fixes, every recommendation that followed traced back to a specific, documented finding below.
Technical & Local SEO Baseline
- Google Business Profile Status: Claimed and verified, but under-optimized — 8 of 10 audited fields passed, while logo consistency and business-name relevance were flagged.
- GBP Field Audit Result: 8 Pass / 1 Fail / 2 Needs Improvement across the profile, title, and linked-website checks.
- Off-Site Authority Signals: Minimal, directly reflected in the grid data below, where 92.6% of tracked search points showed no visibility at all.
- Local Search Visibility: Average grid rank of 20.1, with only 7.4% of points ranking anywhere in the top 20.
- Website Technical / Core Web Vitals: Not assessed in this phase of the engagement, flagged as a recommended follow-on audit.
Grid Performance Analysis
Our initial 27-point grid analysis, pulled for the keyword “air conditioning repair” across the Cambridge metro area, revealed critical weaknesses concentrated everywhere except the immediate area around the business address
| Baseline Metric (July 13) | Result |
| Average grid rank | 20.1 |
| Grid points ranking in Top 10 | 1 of 27 (3.7%) |
| Grid points ranking in Top 20 | 2 of 27 (7.4%) |
| Grid points with no visibility (20+) | 25 of 27 (92.6%) |
Visibility Breakdown by Zone (Baseline)
| Zone | Avg. Rank (July 13) |
| Cambridge / Boston Core | 16.8 |
| North Side (Medford / Malden / Arlington) | 18.0 |
| West Side (Waltham / Watertown / Newton) | 20.0 |
| East Side (Everett / Chelsea / Revere / E. Boston) | 20.0 |
| South Side (Brookline / Jamaica Plain) | 20.0 |
Even the zone closest to the business, the Cambridge/Boston core; averaged a rank of 16.8, well outside the results most customers ever scroll to. Every other zone across the metro area averaged effectively 20+, meaning a customer searching from Medford, Everett, Chelsea, Waltham, Newton, or Brookline would not see Ultra Climate Base on the map at all.
Detailed Audit Findings
The line-item findings behind the summary above, taken directly from the GMB/Local SEO audit worksheet:

Google Business Profile (GBP) Info Audit
| Item | Status | Finding |
| Listing claimed / owned | Pass | Confirmed correct and verified |
| Official business name | Pass | Confirmed correct and matching brand |
| Business address | Pass | Confirmed and verified |
| Phone number | Pass | Confirmed and verified |
| Business description | Pass | Present and populated |
| Business hours | Pass | Present and accurate |
| Logo included in profile | Needs Improvement | A logo is present, but it does not match the logo used on the live website; a brand-consistency gap |
| Estimated age of GMB listing | Pass | Approximately 6 years, estimated from earliest reviews, an established, aged listing |
Business Title Audit
| Item | Status | Finding |
| Service-based keyword in business name | Pass | Present |
| Location-based keyword in business name | Fail | Not found — the business name does not include a location modifier (e.g. “Cambridge”), a missed relevance signal for hyperlocal searches |
Linked Website Audit
| Item | Status | Finding |
| GBP links to a website | Pass | Confirmed — website link present and working |
| Website NAP matches GBP NAP | Needs Improvement | Name and phone match, but the business address is missing from the website’s NAP block — a consistency gap that weakens local trust signals |
| Website served over HTTPS | Pass | Confirmed secure (HTTPS) |
Audit Summary: What the Data Pointed To
Taken together, the profile, title, website, and grid audits told a consistent story: the fundamentals of the listing (claim status, NAP accuracy on the profile itself, hours, description, HTTPS) were solid, but the listing had almost no off-site trust or authority signals reinforcing it; and that gap, more than any single on-page fix, was suppressing visibility across the entire grid.
Section 3
Strategic Implementation Framework
With the audit complete, the findings were grouped into four potential work streams, in line with how Google’s local algorithm evaluates a business simultaneously across relevance, proximity, prominence, and user experience; rather than any single ranking factor in isolation.
The key strategic decision was prioritization: which of these four work streams would move the needle fastest, given the specific gaps this business had. The table below marks which stream this engagement executed against, and which are flagged as recommended next steps.
| Work Stream | Audit Finding(s) Behind It | Status in This Engagement |
| GBP Profile Refinement | Logo mismatch; missing location keyword in business name | Diagnosed — recommended for a future phase |
| Website / NAP Consistency | Address missing from website NAP | Diagnosed — recommended for a future phase |
| Content Expansion | Not separately audited in this phase | Not in scope for this engagement |
| Authority & Backlink Building | Near-total absence of off-site trust signals; 92.6% of grid points showing no visibility | Executed — primary focus of this campaign |
Authority and backlink building was prioritized as the single highest-leverage lever available: a listing with strong on-profile fundamentals but almost no third-party validation will struggle to rank no matter how clean its individual fields are. The other work streams remain open opportunities, detailed in Section 8.
Section 4
Google Business Profile Findings
The GBP-specific findings from the audit are restated here for completeness. These items were identified and documented during this engagement but were not actioned as part of the authority-building work — they are carried forward as recommended next steps (see Section 8).
Logo consistency
the profile logo does not currently match the logo used on the live website. Aligning these strengthens brand recognition and trust at a glance.
Business name
does not currently include a location modifier. Google’s guidelines restrict adding a location purely for keyword-stuffing purposes, so any change here should reflect the business’s actual registered/DBA name.
Profile completeness
Google’s own “profile strength” indicator was still showing incomplete at the time of the audit, with 4 recorded customer interactions — room to grow engagement through Posts, Q&A, and updated photos.
Section 5
Website Technical & On-Site Findings
The linked website was reviewed specifically for local-relevance and NAP-consistency signals as part of the audit.
NAP & Link Consistency
- HTTPS: confirmed secure.
- GBP-to-website link: confirmed working.
- NAP consistency: business name and phone number match between the website and the Google Business Profile, but the physical address is missing from the website’s NAP block — the single clearest on-site fix identified.
Core Web Vitals / Technical Performance
- Not assessed in this phase of the engagement. A full PageSpeed / Core Web Vitals audit (load time, mobile responsiveness, schema markup) is recommended as the next technical work stream (see Section 8) before investing further in content.
Section 6
Authority & Backlink Building - Executed Phase
This was the core, executed work of the engagement, chosen specifically because it addressed the audit’s most severe and highest-impact finding: a near-total lack of off-site authority signals behind an otherwise well-formed profile.
Citation Building & NAP Consistency
establishing and correcting business name, address, and phone data across authoritative local and industry directories so Google could confidently verify the business’s location and legitimacy.
Local & Industry Backlink Acquisition
earning links from locally relevant and HVAC/home-services-adjacent sites to strengthen topical and geographic relevance signals.
Domain Authority Building
growing overall site authority through a structured link acquisition program, reinforcing the site’s credibility in Google’s eyes beyond the Google Business Profile itself.
Authority & Trust Signal Reinforcement
building the kind of third-party validation that shifts a listing from “unverified small business” to “established local authority” in the eyes of the local algorithm.
Section 7
Results Analysis and Performance Metrics
Seven weeks after the baseline audit, the transformation across the grid was dramatic (see the full before/after grid at the top of this case study). Every single tracked point now returns a top-10 local ranking, and nearly half the grid returns a top-5 result; including a rank of #3 at the point closest to the Cambridge/Boston core.
| Result Metric (September 1) | Result |
| Average grid rank | 5.7 |
| Grid points ranking in Top 3 | 1 of 27 (3.7%) |
| Grid points ranking in Top 5 | 13 of 27 (48.1%) |
| Grid points ranking in Top 10 | 27 of 27 (100%) |
| Metric | July 13 (Before) | September 1 (After) | Change |
| Average Grid Rank | 20.1 | 5.7 | -71.6% |
| Top 10 Coverage | 3.7% | 100% | +2,603% |
| Points with No Visibility (20+) | 92.6% | 0% | -92.6 pts |
Grid Performance by Geographic Zone
| Zone | Before (Jul 13) | After (Sep 1) | Improvement |
| Cambridge / Boston Core | 16.8 | 5.2 | 69.0% |
| North Side (Medford / Malden / Arlington) | 18.0 | 6.8 | 62.2% |
| West Side (Waltham / Watertown / Newton) | 20.0 | 6.6 | 67.0% |
| East Side (Everett / Chelsea / Revere / E. Boston) | 20.0 | 5.1 | 74.5% |
| South Side (Brookline / Jamaica Plain) | 20.0 | 5.5 | 72.5% |
Every zone across the metro area improved by more than 60%, and the East Side; previously the weakest zone alongside West and South; saw the single largest gain at 74.5%. No part of the tracked grid was left behind.
Notably, this result came from addressing authority signals alone; the GBP logo mismatch, missing location keyword, and website NAP gap identified in the audit were not yet corrected. That makes the 71.6% average-rank improvement a conservative proof point: it reflects what authority building alone can do, with further upside still on the table.
Section 8
Recommended Next Phase
The audit surfaced several additional opportunities that were out of scope for this engagement but are documented here as a prioritized checklist for a follow-on phase.
Replace the GBP logo with the current website logo for brand consistency.
Complete Google’s profile-strength checklist and increase engagement (Posts, Q&A, updated photos) beyond the 4 interactions recorded at audit time.
Add the full business address to the website’s NAP block to match the Google Business Profile exactly.
Run a full Core Web Vitals / technical performance audit on the website.
Evaluate whether a location modifier can be accurately added to the business name in line with Google’s guidelines.
Layer in a content/on-site phase (neighborhood-specific service pages, FAQ content) once the authority foundation continues to mature.
Section 9
Key Takeaways
- A business with almost no local visibility (92.6% of the grid unranked) can move to full top-10 grid coverage within seven weeks when the audit’s biggest-leverage gap; off-site authority, is addressed directly.
- Average grid rank improved by 71.6%, taking Ultra Climate Base from effectively invisible to a consistent local contender across a wide, competitive metro-area grid.
- Every geographic zone improved by 60% or more, with no part of the coverage area left behind.
- Nearly half of all tracked search points (48.1%) now return a top-5 result for “air conditioning repair,” directly in front of customers searching from across Cambridge, Medford, Somerville, Brookline, and beyond.
- A full line-item audit; not assumptions, is what correctly identified authority as the single highest-leverage lever, ahead of smaller on-page fixes.
- Meaningful remaining upside (logo consistency, NAP completion, business-name optimization, technical performance, content expansion) is already mapped out for the next phase.
Methodology note: The Pre-Optimization Audit was conducted using a structured GBP/Local SEO audit framework scoring each item Pass, Fail, or Needs Improvement against an importance rating. Grid rankings were captured using a local search grid tool measuring Google Business Profile map-pack position for the keyword “Air conditioning repair” across 27 fixed points surrounding Cambridge, MA. Points showing “20+” indicate the business did not appear within the top 20 results at that location and are treated as 20 in zone and average calculations, so actual improvement may be understated. Zone groupings are approximate geographic clusters of grid points, not official municipal boundaries. All figures reflect two point-in-time snapshots (July 13, 2026 and September 1, 2026) rather than continuous daily tracking.
